The National Endowment for the Arts is one of the federal government's largest funders of "placemaking" projects. Chairman Rocco Landesman's focus is to use placemaking tactics to improve social offerings, openness and aesthetics.

Jason Schupbach became Director of Design at the National Endowment for the Arts in May 2010.  In this position, he manages the NEA's grantmaking for design and the NEA's design initiatives, such as the Mayors' Institute on City Design as well as the proposed Our Town, which provides funding in recognition of the role that the arts can play in economic revitalization and in creating livable, sustainable communities. The world has taken notice of Oklahoma City’s remarkable renaissance and its popular Mayor, Mick Cornett, Governing magazine’s 2010 “Public Official of the Year.”

Cornett entered politics in 2001, winning a City Council seat by the largest margin over a sitting incumbent in city history. As Mayor, Cornett led the charge to pass the visionary infrastructure program known as MAPS 3 – a $777-million investment that will dramatically reshape Oklahoma City and enhance the quality of life of its residents. MAPS 3 projects include a 70-acre downtown park, improved sidewalks and hike and bike trails, a modern streetcar system, a new convention center, senior wellness/aquatic centers and other amenities. In addition, he is overseeing Project 180, an ambitious and forward-thinking $140-million, three-year redesign of Oklahoma City’s downtown streets and sidewalks, designed to make the city more pedestrian friendly.

He famously put Oklahoma City “on a diet” in 2007, challenging citizens to improve their health and lose a collective one-million pounds. The goal was reached in January 2012, as more than 47,000 residents logged their weight loss on the awareness campaign’s website, http://www.thiscityisgoingonadiet.com.

Shantel Sellers is a writer and editor who grew up in Honor, Michigan. After serving in the US Army, she completed a BA in Communications and returned to Honor in 2009 with her husband and children. Shantel didn't like what she saw. So, with a few friends, Sellers began to talk about what the people of Honor could do for Honor...

Talk led to action. So far, they've built a sidwalk where there was none. They've created public parking on the main street and built a covered bridge. Landscaping is going in this Spring. More than anything, the citizens of Honor have proved to themselves that they can remake their community. Nothing is stopping them.

Shantel is a founding member and co-chair of Honor Area Restoration Project and a trustee on the Honor Village Council. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Community Economic Development.

Charlottesville Tomorrow is an innovative community news platform covering topics such as growth, development, and politics in the Charlottesville-Albemarle area. What's more interesting is that they are approaching all their news from a placemaking perspective. So it's an innovate approach not only in financing and providing local news, but in how they are providing it: making place central to the coverage.

Brian Wheeler is Executive Director of Charlottesville Tomorrow. Mr. Wheeler, a long-time resident of the area, will explain what happens at the intersection of journalism and placemaking on this episode of Place Matters.
